In summer 2020, about 25 MPS students will serve as ambassadors in downtown Milwaukee during the Democratic National Convention. These new internships are the result of a collaboration among MPS, Marcus Hotels, and the NAF education network Future Ready Lab program. Students will spend several weeks training and then will be assigned at The Pfister, Saint Kate, and the Hilton Milwaukee Center to answer questions, give directions, and make recommendations to visitors.
Milwaukee Public Schools is one of only eight districts in the country selected to offer a Future Ready Lab by the NAF education network. Future Ready Labs match students with local employers for internships. NAF currently provides strategic structure, tools, and resources to support MPS high school students in pursuit of their chosen career fields.
The MPS ambassador program became a Future Ready Lab after a rigorous application process that identified strong goal-oriented school districts and advisory board teams that would plan and implement meaningful internship programs for their high school students. The Democratic National Convention provides a unique opportunity for students to practice workplace and customer service skills, as well as to represent their city.
Ambassador internships are available only to students currently enrolled in the NAF program at their high school. Current NAF host high schools are:
• Bay View High School
• James Madison Academic Campus
• North Division High School
• Ronald Wilson Reagan College Preparatory High School
• South Division High School
• Washington High School of Information Technology
MPS will host an information session and tour of the Hilton Hotel for students and families interested in applying for an ambassador internship on Thursday, January 23, 2020, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. The event will take place at the Hilton Milwaukee City Center located at 509 W. Wisconsin Ave., Milwaukee, WI, 53203.
Because of limited parking in downtown Milwaukee, MPS will offer a bus to the Hilton City Center. The bus will depart from MPS Central Services at 5:30 p.m., and will depart from the Hilton at the conclusion of the event (about 7:40 p.m.). Free parking is available in the large parking lot behind the MPS Central Services building.
MPS Central Services is located at 5225 W. Vliet St., Milwaukee, WI, 53208.
Interested students should register for the Future Ready Lab Family Night by January 22, 2020. Students who cannot attend should their NAF Academy teachers (Mr. Kempen, Ms. Dye Thompson, Ms. Morgan, or Ms. Manuel) or their school counselor to learn about the application process.
