On behalf of the entire faculty and staff of Washington High School, I want to welcome you and your child(ren) to the 2018-2019 school year. We have been working hard preparing for this school year to provide the highest level of learning. In order to preserve the learning environment and minimize classroom disruptions, we have adopted a new Electronic Devices Procedure that will be followed every day.
Milwaukee Public Schools Administrative Policy 8.51 states that “students are prohibited from activating, using, or displaying electronic devices while on school premises.” This also includes school-related activities off school premises, such as field trips. To ensure compliance with this policy, all electronic devices will be collected upon entry to the school building and stored in a secure location throughout the day.
All devices will be returned at the end of the school day in their scheduled 7th hour class; it is imperative that students attend their assigned 7th hour class to retrieve their device(s). Seniors who are not scheduled for a full day of classes may retrieve their devices from the Main office before leaving. Students who have an approved, excused release (such as for a doctor appointment) can also retrieve their devices from the main office before leaving.
As a restorative practices school, we are committed to fostering full engagement in class and offering any needed supports to all students with regard to this new procedure. However, please keep in mind that adherence to this policy is not optional and that if you and/or your child(ren) are hesitant of having electronic devices collected, I encourage you to leave those devices at home.
Administrative Policy 8.51 states that “the school and school district will not be financially responsible for lost or stolen items” if electronic devices are brought to school.
As a final reminder, if you need to reach your child(ren) during the school day for an emergency, simply contact the main office 414-875-5900, and our staff will locate your child(ren), so that you may speak with him/her/them.
If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
