Engineering is Elementary is more than just a name- it is a way of teaching, exploring, inquiring, testing and cultivating a hands on learning method for engineering. Students are engaged in a rigorously researched curriculum focussed on developing higher level thinking for all learners. The project meets the student’s needs at exactly the level they are at and challenge them to interact and collaborate on projects that are relative, interesting and most of all FUN! EiE is proud to provide Walt Whitman students with all of the tools necessary to be successful in conveniently pack and organized kits that are tailored to the specific lessons for the class.
The engineering design process is the hub of the curriculum and the goal is to circulate the ongoing design process of Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create, Improve and Ask again. The next level of each project promises to be more exciting and eventful, more filled with inquiry and discovery, and more collaborative and productive than the last.
“This program is engaging. The students respond with ‘ooo’s’ and ‘ahhh’s’ at every discovery,” says veteran 1st grade educator Mrs. Kreuger, “and it is amazing to see what they come up with- there is no real ‘one answer fits all’ so the possibilities are endless. Making a mistake is part of the process, and so is doing something about it!”
Teacher guides include background content, four detailed lesson plans, and even duplication masters for student handouts- including planning and data collection sheets as well as reflection and assessment sheets. Much of the background content includes learning goals, related scientific and social studies knowledge, information on alignment with common science curricula and national standards, and a unit-specific vocabulary list.
