The Department of Black and Latino Male Achievement would like to acknowledge South Division student Alejandro Perez. Below are his thoughts on the following questions as part of our campaign for #HispanicHeritageMonth:
Why is your cultural/racial identity important to you? What are your thoughts on Hispanic Heritage Month?
“My culture is important to me because I am proud of being Latino. Hispanic Heritage Month is important because we get to celebrate our culture.”
Which BLMA Twelve Guiding Principle resonates most with you and why?
“Out of the Twelve BLMA Guiding Principles the one that resonates most with me is academic success. I think this is because I really want to do good in school and I want to keep getting good grades.”
Why is #ChangeTheNarrative important for our Latino males and men of color?
“Its important because changing the narrative changes the way people see my community. This will also help people that feel that their life is just ‘the streets.’”
What do you love about Milwaukee? What is your vision for the city?
“Milwaukee has the most diverse schools, and I feel lucky to attend South. At South I learn about other cultures and I think this is unique because I wouldn’t get this opportunity in any other school.”
