MKE Mountain Bike Team (MKE MTB Team, run by Milwaukee Recreation and based out of Riverside University High School, held its first race of the season this past Sunday at Minooka Park in Waukesha! The MKE MTB Team has amazing coaches, including RUHS’s own Mr. Zettel. Hodan Mohamud, a Riverside Tiger, competed in her first race at Minooka with teammates from other MPS schools.
Hodan had a challenging race and can be proud of her finish. Due to circumstances beyond her control, she was rushed to the starting line at the last minute, immediately following an accelerated practice ride. Hodan needed to complete 2 loops of a 5 mile looped single-track mountain bike course. After her first loop she was tired, but the team and coaching staff cheered her on. Although she was exhausted, she said she couldn’t stop. The medic-mountain biker trailed her the entire way on the second loop. Just as the boys’ race was getting lined up, Hodan came into the finish to a hero’s welcome! The sidelines were filled with people cheering her to the finish line. It was an emotional finish for everyone. The medic stated she “killed” the course and “rocked” the finish! Way to go Hodan!
The boys were incredible as well! Two of the boys just narrowed out Top 20 finishes with 21st & 29th place finishes. This team knows how important it is to work on strength and endurance and most of all, get muddy and have fun. Many coaches from other school districts complimented the MKE MTB Team for having its first team at a race.
There’s still time for YOU to join the MKE MTN Team! The club competes against other teams in the Wisconsin High School Cycling League. Riders of all levels and abilities are encouraged to participate. We welcome students ages 12-18 years old from all over Milwaukee. Participants are encouraged to bring their own bikes; however, bikes are available upon request. The cost to register is $25, but scholarships are available based on need. Please see Mr. Zettel for more information or register online. Link
