ようこそ

Welcome to Japanese at Milwaukee School of Languages.

All middle school Japanese classes are one semester courses. In 6th grade Japanese students are given an introduction to the Japanese language and culture. Students learn about the three Japanese writing systems through reading and writing activities, as well as learn simple language skills through speaking and listening activities. Students also increase their awareness and understanding of Japanese culture by learning about Japan’s geography, food, traditions, and holidays.

In 7th grade Japanese students learn about one of the Japanese writing systems, hiragana, in depth. Students learn how to read and write words in hiragana. Students also develop their language skills through speaking and listening activities. Units of study include typical family life in Japan, Japanese schools and Japanese middle school student life.

In 8th grade Japanese students study another of the writing systems, katakana, in depth. They learn how to read and write words in katakana. Student also develop their language skills through speaking and listening activities. Units of study include illness and injury, ordering at a fast food restaurant, and shopping at a department store.

In High school Japanese is offered as a year-long course. First year high school Japanese is designed for students that may have had a semester of Japanese in middle school, or have never studied Japanese before. Students learn both hiragana and katakana and begin to learn kanji characters towards the end of the year. Students also develop their language skills through speaking and listening activities.

Second year through fourth year Japanese classes continue to build on the writing skills the students have developed. Students continue to increase their knowledge of kanji, as well as develop more complex vocabulary and grammar skills.
