School Nutrition Information
Milwaukee Public Schools is proud to be recognized by the Food Research Action Committee (FRAC) for increased participation in the National School Breakfast Program. There were 4.7 million breakfasts served in the 2007-08 school year, more than twice the number served just two years earlier.
Milwaukee Public Schools follow federal nutrition guidelines serving more fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy than ever before. School nutrition professional prepare and serve balanced, nutritious meals in age-appropriate portion sizes that provided needed nutrition and promote healthy childhood weights. School lunch provides one-third of the recommended dietary allowances of protein, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, iron, calcium and calories. School breakfast provides one-fourth of the recommended calories and nutrients per day.
We are encouraging all students to prepay!
Go to www.MyPaymentsPlus.com to pre-pay your child’s account or check on their purchases. MyPaymentsPlus accepts credit or debit cards or electronic checks.
The prepayment system shortens the wait time in line and decreases incidents of lost money. The money is then deducted from the child’s account each time they go through the line, and can be used for lunch or milk. Cash or checks made out to the school should include your child’s name and room number. Prepaying does not require your child to eat hot lunch everyday. The money remains in the account until the next time they stay for a meal.
Maryland Avenue Montessori School offers hot breakfast and lunch at school. Families with low incomes may apply for reduced price or free meals by completing an application from the school office. Unless an application is submitted and approved, students must pay full price. Students are only allowed one lunch at the prices listed below. Additional lunches for students have to be paid for at the adult cost.
If you choose not to use the Electronic Prepayment system, checks will be acceptable made payable to Maryland Avenue Montessori School. Please give to your child’s classroom teacher in an envelope with the child’s name and classroom number. You can pay the cook directly by visiting the lunch room when at school. Our cook is available in the morning before school and until about 1:00 P. M. If you have a question about your child’s school lunch account she can provide you a computer print out of charges and deposits. Please work with the school to keep your child’s lunch account accurate.
Students may choose to bring a cold lunch. Parents are encouraged to send a balanced, nutritious meal. Skim, 2%, chocolate and whole milks are available for $.35 per carton. Children are not allowed to drink sodas or eat candy bars with their lunches.
Due to federal lunch and breakfast guidelines it is prohibitive to allow students to eat fast food or restaurant food in the cafeteria. This includes lunches and breakfast. If your child has a fast food lunch they have to eat them at the restaurant or in the car before they enter the school building. Leftovers from a restaurant packed in a student’s cold lunch that does not show the restaurant logo is allowed.
Maryland Avenue Montessori offers breakfast for children who have not had breakfast at home. We encourage children to eat breakfast before they come to school because the children who eat breakfast at school enter their classes after the school day has begun and lose out on valuable instructional time.
Parents are invited to eat lunch with their child in the lunchroom. If you would like to purchase a school lunch, send a note with your child or notify the cook before 9:00 a.m. Adult lunches cost $2.75 plus $.35 for milk. Senior citizen’s lunches cost $1.50.
