The JMAC Chess Team is open to students who are beginners and/or advanced in the game of chess. Members of the chess team learn the rules of chess, how the pieces move, various ways to checkmate an opponent, and opening strategy. In addition to learning the strategic aspect of chess, students work to improve their critical thinking and problem-solving skills. In most cases, students are expected to apply their knowledge at local chess tournaments in the Wisconsin Scholastic Chess Federation (WSCF) and/or the United States Chess Federation-sponsored competitions.
Chess Tournaments are paid for by the club. Students who work hard have the option of having their USCF one-year membership paid for by the club. The chess club is currently in the process of identifying a group of officers who will run the club with the guidance of the chess advisors.
If you are interested in joining the club, see Mr. Moore (chess club advisor) in room 354 during home base or after school. Individuals who are not interested in joining the club but want to simply play chess are also welcome to come to our practices on Tuesdays/Thursdays from 4:00pm to 5:00pm.
