There are many ways to describe PBIS. Most common is PBIS is a research-based, school-wide systems approach to improve school climate and create safer and more effective schools. It IS a process, it IS NOT a program, a curriculum, or scripted intervention. The process focuses on improving a school’s ability to teach expectations and support positive behavior for all students. Also, it is a team-based process for data review, data-based problem solving and intervention, ongoing planning, and monitoring of interventions. Its implementation includes school-wide procedures and processes intended for: ALL students, ALL staff and in ALL settings. This includes individual classrooms and teachers AND non-classroom settings and related staff.
The Madison Knights used this framework to implement the Knight’s Code.
One example is the Knight’s Code Matrices:
- The matrices are expectations for students and staff
- They are common sense ideas but also procedures on how to act in a given situation
- They are not meant to be a dead document that hangs on the wall but something to be reviewed and referred to…
If students are following our school wide expectations (Knight’s Code), we want to recognize that rather than focusing on the student’s that do not want to be or have not started to be part of a positive behavior community. Which is where acknowledgements begin. Some are…
- In class: praise, tangible rewards (such as Knight’s Move tickets), drawing within your classroom.
- School wide: acknowledgment at Pep Rally or school assembly, “winning” reward through Knight’s Move
“Knight’s Move” is our PBIS acknowledgement system which frequently acknowledges students who display positive behaviors in the school environment. The incentives earned by students on a classroom and school wide level are meant to encourage students to have pride in their own behaviors and also provides the opportunity for students to contribute to the school community as a whole. Teachers and school staff are a valuable part of helping to build this community. Knight’s Move and Knight’s Code is a culture within our school.
