Dr. King School values parental involvement in every aspect of learning. Students achieve more when parents take part in their education, expanding their support system beyond the classroom walls. The staff and teachers at Dr. King School strive to create and maintain regular open communication with families. We extend a hand to parents, inviting them to join us in celebrating their child’s learning and success.
As a priority, we want to establish positive contact with parents. For this reason, Dr. King School implemented the merit card program, which rewards students for good attendance, study habits and behavior. The merit card is sent home at the end of each week to be signed by parents, updating them on their child’s progress.
Parents are welcome to visit their child’s classroom to observe or assist the teacher as a parent volunteer. Through classroom visits, parents maintain awareness and knowledge of the Dr. King curriculum and classroom projects. We also invite parents to participate in school-wide programs, including Career Day, Award Days, Open House, the Black History Program and the Kwanzaa Program to name a few.
As a reflection of how much we value parent input, we encourage and invite parents to participate in our School Council/Parent Teacher Organization (PTO). The Dr. King School Council/PTO meets on the fourth Thursday of every month at 3 p.m. All parents and guardians are strongly encouraged to join. Various school related topics are covered. Child care is provided during meetings.
Dr. King School partners with COA Youth and Family Centers. This organization helps Milwaukee children, teachers and families reach their greatest potential through a continuum of educational, recreational and social programs. This partnership affords families the opportunity to take part in 21st Century Community Learning Centers, which offer family support, including literacy and technology education, GED opportunities and job coaching for parents.
Parent participation and commitment to education does not go unnoticed at Dr. King School. Volunteers are recognized during Staff Appreciation day and also at the year-end Awards Assembly.
