Senior Letter

May 8, 2020

Greetings Hamilton Class of 2020 Senior Class,

At the April 23, 2020 meeting of the Milwaukee Board of School Directors, several important decisions were made that will impact you as you prepare for graduation.

The district was approved to request a waiver from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction to eliminate the Civic Test requirement for graduation. If you did not pass the Civics Test prior to the closure of schools but have met other requirements for graduation, you will be able to graduate.

Additionally, graduation requirements have been modified for the students in the graduation cohorts of 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020. If you meet the credits required in Wisconsin Administrative Code PI 18.03, then you will graduate.  Credits required include:

  1. 4 credits of English
  2. 3 credits of math
  3. 3 credits of social studies (No specific course requirements)
  4. 3 credits of Science
  5. 5 credits of Health
  6. 5 credits of Physical Education

If you are currently enrolled in a GEDO #2 or a competency program and meet the outlined criteria in those programs, then you will graduate. If you are currently enrolled in a GEDO #2 program, you could also meet graduation requirements through competency programs or by completing your exams if a test site opens in May – July.

If you recently transferred into MPS, the school counselor will evaluate your transcript to determine which courses count toward graduation. Counselors will reach out to families to inform them of their students’ status.

If a student was currently enrolled in a class and was passing at Term 3, they will pass the course.  You can check your grades in the Campus Student Portal. Teachers will be providing enrichment to students who are passing to better prepare you for college and career readiness.

If you were currently enrolled in a class, but are not passing at Term 3 snapshot here are the options available to you:

  • Teachers will have reviewed snapshot grades and will have considered any new evidence or makeup work. Check your student portal account to see if your grade has updated after April 27.
  • Your principal will contact you about opportunities to enroll in a specialized course to earn credit. English learners and students with disabilities will have support if this option is chosen.
  • Your teacher may continue to work with you to help you pass your current course.

All grades for the second semester will be Pass/Fail.

If you still need to complete graduation requirements, watch for information about June and July summer school.  There will be opportunities for earning credit and participating in credit recovery for classes where you have earned a D or F.

As we prepare for the upcoming graduations, please continue to fill out your graduation surveys through Qualtrics that you received on April 27th by email.  This information will help us plan for our celebration of your upcoming graduation.  On Monday, May 11th and Tuesday, May 12th we will be distributing all senior items including caps, gowns, diploma covers, and yard signs. In order to plan for safe physical distancing during distributions, please follow the schedule below for pick up times.  If you have a scheduled AP exam during the distribution time, you will be allowed to come during a different pickup or the make-up time.  The senior distribution will happen at Exit #5 in the school parking lot.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Trinette H Green
