Thank a teacher during Teacher Appreciation Week
Thank a teacher during Teacher Appreciation Week
This week is Teacher Appreciation Week! As we navigate school closures during the coronavirus pandemic, please share your thanks and support of all teachers who educate and care for our children. Our students’ futures depend on the work of teachers and school staff.
Help us celebrate teachers! Send us a creative photo, message of thanks, or short video honoring a favorite teacher or your school. Post on social media and tag with #TAW2020, #MPSProud, or #MPSTeacher, or send your messages to us at comm@milwaukee.k12.wi.us
Teaching is a balancing act of academics, safety, behavior, and student needs, now with added layers of complexity during the Safer at Home order. MPS teachers are finding new ways to engage with their students through social media, Google Classroom, online learning, and more. Browse MPS social media posts on Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter, and Instagram to see the many ways that teachers are staying connected and supporting students.
Nationwide, teachers are in demand. A national shortage of teachers means that schools will be searching to fill teaching positions at least through the next five to ten years. Consider becoming a teacher to impact the next generation!
Thank you to every one of the more than 5,000 teachers who work for MPS! Our students, families, and the community appreciate the dedication and hard work that teachers put in every day. We encourage the entire Milwaukee community to thank our teachers!
Access MPS Online Learning
Help your child keep learning! With schools closed due to coronavirus, it’s important for students to learn while at home. MPS will be closed for at least three weeks of regular class time.
MPS is currently offering instructional learning materials at all 20 “Stop, Grab, and Go” locations along with packaged meals for students. Learn more about this program on the MPS COVID-19 Update page. These instructional materials are filled with activities to support and enrich learning during the extended closure.
Students and families can also access a number of online resources selected by the MPS Office of Academics. Online access to websites for enrichment in reading, writing, math, science, and more for all grade levels are provided below.
Accessing the Student Toolbox
Step 1: Click Student Toolbox from the MPS webpage OR Go to clever.com/in/milwaukee.
Step 2: Click ‘Log in with Google’ (Use your MPS Google login).
Students first will be asked for their Google login. Students should enter their S# followed by @milwaukee.k12.wi.us; for example, s1234567@milwaukee.k12.wi.us.
Students then will be asked to enter their password. Students should enter their date of birth in the format of mm/dd/yy; for example, 03/10/05.
Step 3: Select a program and start learning!
MPS Student Job Fair is March 11, 2020
Getting a first job is a huge step in the life of a teenager. To help students explore jobs, meet hiring managers, and succeed in the world of work, Milwaukee Public Schools will host its third annual Job Fair on March 11, 2020. Approximately 800 students are expected to attend in search of summer and year-round work. Employers are invited to register for the fair, which will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee Student Union.
Following the first job fair in 2018, MPS received an overwhelming response from employers, who hired hundreds of students and begged for the job fair to become an annual event. Space has been expanded to include more employers and provide more options for students.
In addition to searching for immediate jobs, students have the chance to explore new fields that may lead to lifelong careers including automotive, construction, health care, law enforcement, manufacturing, and more. After the 2019 job fair, Daniel from South Division High School said, “I was nervous at first, but the employers were really nice. I filled out three applications plus I found some really cool careers I didn’t even know about.”
Employers should sign up now to meet our enthusiastic, motivated students. Register at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/2020-mps-student-job-fair-registration-84653540017
Space at the job fair is free and includes one parking spot and a light lunch for two people. An area will be available for on-site interviews. For questions and registration information, contact Tamera Coleman at employMPSstudents@milwaukee.k12.wi.us
Students who completed a Work Readiness session at their school are eligible to attend the job fair. Work Readiness sessions help prepare students to fill out job applications, interview, and be ready for the world of work. Students can speak with their counselor or stop in any College and Career Center with questions and to receive a permission slip. Bus transportation will be provided for students to attend the job fair.
The UWM Student Union is located at 2200 East Kenwood Blvd., Milwaukee, WI 53211.
MPS wants your opinion
The vision of Milwaukee Public Schools is to provide an equitable educational environment that is child-centered, supports achievement, and respects and embraces diversity. The district is launching a community survey designed to gather input about important education topics and is seeking the input of students, families, educators, staff and all community members. The results of the district survey will be used to determine how we can strengthen our students’ academic experiences and enrich opportunities for them.
Everyone in the city is encouraged to take the survey and attend a listening session. The survey, which takes about 10 minutes to complete, can be accessed at mpsmke.com/survey. Survey responses are confidential, and the survey will remain open until September 12, 2019.
MPS encourages attendance at a series of listening sessions designed for the community to provide feedback and help guide MPS in creating a learning community that achieves a vision. Please plan to attend one or more sessions.

Modified MPS calendar adjusts for school days lost due to weather closings
Milwaukee Public Schools declared its sixth school closure day this year due to weather on Tuesday, February 12, 2019. To account for all instructional hours required by the State of Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, a number of calendar changes were proposed by MPS. The calendar changes were approved by the Milwaukee Board of School Directors on February 12.
The calendar changes are designed to minimize the impact on the overall school calendar and to avoid adding school days to the end of the year. Parents should take note of a significant change that makes Tuesday, February 19, an attendance day for all students. Prior to the weather closings, school was not scheduled to be in session on this date.
MPS partnership and charter schools, whose calendars may differ from the MPS calendar, may opt to revise and distribute calendar changes directly to families.
The complete list of adjustments to the remainder of the 2018–19 school year appears below. To download a flyer showing the calendar modifications, visit mpsmke.com/calendar
