On Thursday, January 28, 2021, the Milwaukee Board of School Directors voted unanimously to continue planning to gradually begin in-person learning.
The goal is to begin providing in-person instruction on February 8, 2021, for approximately 300 students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). The Department of Specialized Services will contact families directly. The tentative start date for in-person learning for students in Pre-K through grade 2 will begin on April 12, 2021, students in grades 3 through 8 will begin April 19, 2021, and students in grades 9 through 12 will begin April 26, 2021.
We know that some families may have hesitations about this decision. The health and safety of our students, staff, and community continue to be a top priority as MPS plans for a safe and responsible return to in-person learning. We are pleased to move forward and offer an in-person learning option for families that would like to have their child attend a physical classroom. We also understand that not all families will be comfortable with this option, and therefore we will continue to provide virtual learning for families who feel this is the best option for their child.
To ensure we are prepared for our phased-in transition, we will continue to monitor the health of our MPS community. We will continue to ensure our buildings’ heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, personal protective equipment (PPE) supplies, cleaning and disinfecting protocols, isolation rooms, and gating criteria are in line with the federal, state, and local guidance as appropriate.
We thank you for your continued partnership in supporting students’ education, and we value the flexibility and collaboration among our students, families, staff, board members, and union partners. We recognize that you may have additional questions, and as we move closer to our phase-in dates, we will continue to send timely updates and information to ensure you and your student are aware of your options. During the March Board cycle, a decision will be made whether the proposed timeline is appropriate.
