My name is Coach Melissa and I am a second year coach with Playworks Wisconsin. This is my first year here at Burdick, and I am eager to get to know all of the students. I love working for Playworks because I get to be active and play games with students on a daily basis. My main focus is creating a safe and inclusive environment for everyone on the playground, but I also have the opportunity to meet with classes and students on an individual basis. I teach new and exciting games that focus on empowering students to be safe, respectful, and responsible in their day to day lives.
Playworks vision is that, “one day every child in America will get to play—every day. We use the power of safe and healthy play to create a positive culture throughout the entire school. We want our students to feel safe and included when they’re on the playground as well as in the classroom. School should be a place for being creative, making friends, and having fun. Playworks strives to ensure that all students truly have that opportunity.
In addition to leading recess games, I will also be meeting with all classes on a bi-weekly bases. During these game time sessions, I will be leading group games that help to guide students to make safe, respectful, and responsible decisions. These game time sessions directly relate to the activities students are participating in on the playground, helping to create that positive culture inside and outside of the classroom. I use these game times to allow students to get to know their classmates, share ideas, learn new cheers and games, practice resolving conflicts, and to be creative.
As your coach, I will be leading an after school program called the Junior Coach Leadership Program. I will be recruiting sixteen 4th and 5th grade students as Junior Coaches. These Junior Coaches will participate in after school trainings that prepare them to take on leadership roles in the school. They will be leading games and cheers on the playground for the younger students, and will become role models among all their peers.
Finally, I have the opportunity to coach two developmental leagues. I coach co-ed soccer in the fall and girls basketball in the spring. These leagues are for 4th and 5th grade students who may have never had the opportunity to play the sport before. I focus on teaching basic skills, encouraging teamwork, and having fun. The students in these leagues get to play in real games against teams from other Playworks schools. These games are inclusive, high energy, and very fun!
I am ready and excited to be your Playworks Coach at AE Burdick this year. I can already tell that the school culture is amazing, and I know that Playworks can open up so many more great opportunities for our students.
