The Burdick Blue basketball team and the Burdick seventh and-eighth-grade volleyball teams won their respective league championships on Saturday.
In the noon championship matchup, Burdick Blue played an up-and-down affair with Bethune. A furious first half had the Panthers tied 9-9 behind Matthew Risser’s six points and tough inside play. Buckets by Nate Condiff and Manny Cruz, and the tenacious play of Jayson Hernandez put the Panthers ahead after three quarters 16-13. Defensive pressure and solid rebounding led the Panthers in the fourth quarter, and Damien Johnson sunk four free throws down the stretch to secure a 22-17 victory and a league championship.
The Burdick volleyball team took the first two sets over Fernwood to capture the seventh and eighth-grade league championship. The floor play of Josh Barndt, Aniya Small, and Hazel Merced, and the serving of Brady Bozich and Elliot DePerry to close out the set led the Panthers to a 25-23 in the first set. Behind the serving of Asher Ward and great team floor play, Burdick opened a 10-3 lead and never looked back, securing a 25-11 victory and the league championship. Burdick dropped the third set 25-21.
Behind great team play, the Burdick fifth and sixth-grade basketball team won its season finale 27-24.
Special thanks to the players, families, Coach Wilde, Coach Conti, and Coach McGreehin for another terrific winter sports season. Your dedication is a big reason Burdick is what it is.
