Congratulations to Burdick student Haliey Cruz for winning first place in the sixth-grade division of the Martin Luther King Jr. essay contest. Hailey delivered her essay at the 35th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration at the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts on January 20. From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:

“The focus of the black civil rights movement was legal equality. While this was understandable and the immediate priority, it also had a downside. Once official discrimination was ended and formal legal equality won, the movement dissipated. Moreover, racism was not vanquished.”
