Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)
PBIS is a joint effort between Milwaukee Public Schools Office of Family Services and the Milwaukee Teachers’ Education Association to effectively reduce classroom disruptions and student suspensions through a school-wide systematic tiered-intervention approach. Data shows that schools that implement PBIS with fidelity see decreases in disruptions and suspensions and increases in student achievement.
Strong community partnerships enable Burbank students to extend their education beyond the classroom walls. Thanks to the generosity of local organizations, new learning opportunities and unique experiences are part of the curriculum. Students receive academic support, interact with mentors and utilize donations of clothing and school supplies. Field trips to local businesses and organizations as well as classroom visits from community leaders allow students to view the world through new perspectives. Knowing that community leaders and local organizations support our students and their achievements, Burbank learners develop the motivation to continue their quest for new insight and knowledge.
Burbank community partners include:
- Marquette University
- Martin Luther Lutheran Church
- Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra – Arts in Community Education (ACE) Program
- Milwaukee Art Museum – Junior Docent Program
- University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee
Milwaukee Art Museum Junior Docent Program
For more than thirty-five years, the Milwaukee Art Museum Junior Docent School Program has introduced elementary school students to the vocabulary, elements, and history of art while developing critical thinking skills. Over three consecutive years, students visit nine times, contextualizing art into their life. After a culminating project presented to their peers and family, they become official Junior Docents!
