Parents

At Bruce, we believe that parents serve as the first and most important educators in a child’s life. Education begins at home and our staff strives to build upon the basic foundation and values instilled in young learners before they attend school. Families are essential to a child’s success both inside and outside the classroom. For this reason, Bruce provides endless opportunities for parents to be active in their child’s education. A variety of meetings, events and activities are held during the year to keep parents and guardians involved at Bruce.

Parent Teacher Organization and School Governance Council
Parents are encouraged to attend Bruce’s monthly School Governance Council and Parent Teacher Organization (P.T.O.) meetings. During scheduled meetings, parents become involved in planning, reviewing and improving the school educational plan, school budget and schedule of schoolwide activities. School Governance Council and P.T.O. meetings are held the last Tuesday of every month from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.

Wednesday Folders
Each Wednesday, folders containing pertinent information for parents are sent home with students. Weekly updates provide information on current happenings at Bruce, upcoming events, school operations information (pick-up times and safety procedures) and save-the-date reminders.

Volunteerism
An extra set of hands is always welcome at Bruce. Parents are encouraged to volunteer in classrooms or in the school office in order to help the Bruce staff complete tasks more efficiently. In addition, chaperones are often needed for field trips or in-school events.

Curriculum Nights
Bruce holds several Curriculum Nights during evenings throughout the year. Parents are invited to visit Bruce and familiarize themselves with the school curriculum, ask questions of the grade level staff members and brainstorm new ideas. The Bruce staff responds to parent needs in an effort to strengthen home-school connections and ensure that students are receiving the best education possible.

Activities
Bruce holds many events that afford parents the opportunity to visit our wonderful school. Events include science fairs, an ice cream social, Muffins with Mom, Donuts with Dad, Grandparent’s Day, a volunteer dinner, Valentine Sock Hop, Girl Scouts Harvest Dance, Black History Program, student concerts, Math Fun Night, “Cat in the Hat” Literacy Night and Back to School Night. Twice a year, parent-teacher conferences ensure that parents and teachers communicate face-to-face about student progress, successes and obstacles. The P.T.O. also sponsors additional events for parents.
