Bruce School is proud to have a soccer team made up of an enthusiastic group of 1^st-3^rd grade students. Under the direction of Ms. Gonzalez (Special Education Primary Resource Teacher), who has coached both our fall and spring teams, the students play a high-energy game every Saturday. This upcoming weekend, the students will be on hiatus in honor of the Memorial Day weekend, but will resume play for the final game on Saturday, June 1^st at 12:00 noon. Games are played on the soccer field at Vincent High School at 7501 N. Granville Road. We encourage all staff to come out and support our students and Ms. Gonzalez for their final game of the season.

Story Choice Featuring Sheromar Simmonds

Throughout the school year, Bruce students read many non-fiction stories. This week, we highlight a favorite story by Sheromar Simmonds. Sheromar is a 3^rd grader in Mr. Ringenoldus’ room. Please enjoy reading about her story choice.

“A Tree is Growing” by Arthur Dorros; Illustrated by S.D. Schindler

Sheromar likes learning about the parts of the tree and what the tree’s characteristics tell us about these living things. During an interview, Sheromar stated:

“The part in the book that I like is about the branches. The thin ones are just beginning to grow and the thick ones have been there for years. You can tell how old a tree is by how thick it is. If you cut open the stump you can see how many years the tree has been alive. I thought that was really interesting about a tree growing.”

Sheromar also likes to read about other living things, saying “In the book they have different kinds of bugs like the earthworm. Another one was the beetle. It looked really cool and I said to myself, ‘I wish I could see one in real life.’ I just wonder how it would look up close. “

When asked about her fascination with bugs, Sheromar shared a personal story:

“I have a cousin who takes dead bugs and puts them in her microscope and looks at them up close. She keeps them in a plastic container. She takes them out after a few months when they start to get stinky.”

In Sheromar’s opinion, it’s fun to learn about nature and living things.

Chuck E. Cheese’s Fundraiser A Success

Last week Thursday, the Bruce School community enjoyed an evening of food, family and fun at Chuck E. Cheese’s in West Allis. There were over $500 in purchases made. Our school will receive a portion of the amount to put towards our PBIS incentives. Thank you to everyone who came out and spent the evening with us. We appreciate your support!

Mrs. Temple Receives CEC Thelma Stack/Outstanding Contributor Award

The CEC hosted its annual awards banquet on Saturday, May 3rd. The banquet honors educators and students who make outstanding contributions in the special education field. This year Mrs. Temple (special education MRP primary teacher) received the Thelma Stack/Outstanding Contributor award, presented to someone who has made an outstanding contribution to the lives of exceptional children in the area of service.

Mrs. Temple has truly exemplified the dedication and service of Thelma Stack. She has served the students of Bruce School for many years and has provided them with the opportunities to engage in a variety of real-world experiences. Mrs. Temple’s students have led community service projects, managed a school store and bake sale, and visited a local nursing home to cheer up the elderly. During these visits, students perform for their appreciative audiences, create art projects or enjoy warm conversations. At the end of each week, Mrs. Temple’s students cook or bake goodies and engage in lessons that are directly connected to their special projects.

Last fall, Mrs. Temple was the recipient of Office Max’s “A Day Made Better” honor, receiving over $1,000 in supplies, furniture and equipment for use in her classroom. We once again congratulate Mrs. Temple on her 2013 CEC honor, and hope you enjoy the photos from the event!

Ms. Elrick Honored as the CEC June Hartenthaler/Team Collaboration Award Winner

Ms. Elrick, CEC Award Winner

The CEC hosted its annual awards banquet on Saturday, May 3rd. The banquet honors educators and students who make outstanding contributions in the special education field. This year Ms. Elrick (special education resource teacher) received the June Hartenthaler/Team Collaboration award. This award is given to an individual or team involved in the successful integration of students with exceptional needs into the regular education classroom.

Ms. Elrick is a special education resource teacher who encourages inclusion into the general education setting. Ms. Elrick co-teaches and plans with the regular education classroom teachers, considering teaching materials and strategies that will make lessons engaging and goals attainable.

In addition to her work in the classroom, Ms. Elrick volunteers her time after school to serve as a member of our Learning Team and PBIS Team. She willingly brings a special education perspective to ensure that our academic and extracurricular programming will provide rich, meaningful experiences for all of our students.
