• Instructional Pivot

C. Personnel Committee
Keith Posley, superintendent of Milwaukee Public Schools, gave an update on staffing. On Third Friday, a student count was completed. Bradley Tech was 14 students short of the budgeted goal. The school reduced expenditures by eliminating a secretary and a paraprofessional position, one of these positions was a current vacancy. The school has three open teaching positions in the areas of Math, Special Education, and Manufacturing.
Plan of Operations Report
A. Principal’s Report
Principal Shapiro presented the Principal’s Report via PowerPoint.
Principal Shapiro highlighted:
• The Bradley Technology and Trade Vision. To graduate every student with the necessary skills to build a prosperous future in the Technology and Trade fields by providing students grade-appropriate work, strong instruction, deep engagement, and high expectations.
• School remains full virtual indefinitely due to the rise in cases and on the advice of the City Health Department.
Principal Shapiro gave an update on the strategic plan goals and key indicators.
• One metric highlight was the large jump in Mathematics passing rates.
• The School Improvement Plan includes students using No Red Ink software; this language arts software is similar to the ALEKS mathematics software.
• The number of students choosing BT as their first choice continues to climb.
• The School Stability rate, the percentage of students enrolled on the May count date of the first year that is still enrolled on the following year’s September count date, has seen a significant increase from prior years. In 2018-2019, the rate was 75.5% vs 89.3% in 2019-2020.
• A Tech Virtual Tour, Promotional Video, and expanded social media messaging will support enrollment efforts during COVID.
Anthony Staton, Sr. gave an update on the Tech Alumni Association.
The Tech Alumni Association supported BT students by awarding over $7,000 in scholarships in 2020. Over the last three years, $25,000 has been awarded to college-bound students. Every year at least seven students have received scholarships.
State of the Association:
A. Staton, Sr. expressed the need to have more alumni support the association. He would like the alumni group to grow in membership and support the school in ways other than scholarships. He will connect with Dom Portis and brainstorm ideas.
On behalf of the Commission, J. Taylor expressed appreciation for A. Staton, Sr. and the work he puts into supporting the school and promoting the alumni association.
Action Item: To support alumni association recruitment, Dom Portis and Dr. Keith Posley offered to provide names from their network to Anthony Staton, Sr.
B. Business Liaison Report
Latonia Bird, Bradley Tech Business Liaison gave an update:
• 3 students are officially employed via the Youth Apprenticeship Program.
• 9 students in Internship Build to Learn
• Many students are candidates for Youth Apprenticeship Program. Paid positions are limited under the current COVID conditions. Tech staff is making strong efforts to link paid opportunities with students who fit the job requirements.
• MC3 program already has 60 students signed up with the opportunity to earn a NABTU certification after 120 hours.
C. Community Schools Update
Dom Portis, Community School Coordinator, shared Bradley Tech’s “A Community Schools Refresher” via PowerPoint.
Dom stated that the COVID situation has provided the staff with the opportunity to build stronger systems. D. Portis noted the Community Schools Model has evolved, especially over the summer.
On August 27, the school and CSM hosted a Parent Café. This gave BT staff a chance to check in with parents and ask what was working for them and how the school could better collaborate with the parents to support them. They also created a Google Site for additional ways for families to engage with the school during Open House. https://sites.google.com/milwaukee.k12.wi.us/techopenhouse/home
D. Portis advocated for Bradley Tech to be a recipient of the Manhood Academy BLMAD course. The course has no cost but would necessitate a stipend be paid to faculty or staff for participation on Saturdays when the course is held.
The Community Schools Model has opened up applications for cohort 2 of CARE Coalition of Anti-Racist and Restorative Educators.
