Welcome to the vibrant, nurturing learning community of Lloyd Barbee MPS Montessori. Our school offers a high quality education, dedicated teaching staff and unique learning opportunities to our students, families and community.
The Montessori method of education is based on the philosophy that children reach their fullest potential through multi-age interactions in an inquiring, cooperative and encouraging atmosphere. Our staff focuses on fostering competent and responsible students who demonstrate creativity, concentration, coordination and independence in their work. The Montessori environment and teachers ensure that our young learners build confidence in their abilities, feel good about their school experience and develop peaceful relationships with their peers.
What Makes Lloyd Barbee Special?
Our curricular program is very special. We are one of six MPS Montessori Schools which offer an educational program that follows Maria Montessori’s teachings of individualized instruction in a multi-aged classroom with specialized materials that help students learn concepts in a concrete way in all areas including Mathematics, Reading, Science, History, Geography, and Writing.
We have many special events and opportunities for students and families at Lloyd Barbee. This semester our all day students have an opportunity to be in the Montessori Arts Camp where they are working with professional artists, musicians, dancers and actors to put on a musical called “One Man’s Trash is Another Man’s Treasure”.
The Upper Elementary students are participating in Mad Hot Ballroom and Tap which is a partnership with Danceworks where the students either learn tap or ballroom dances and then go on to compete on a city wide level in May at the Bradley Center.
Many of our students are participating in an art program at the Lynden Sculpture Garden with artists from UWM. The students visit the beautiful outdoor museum and then create art in response to nature and the art they see there.
Various classes are going on field trips around the area some of these trips include: Biz Town, the Zoo, the Milwaukee Public Museum, Discovery World, the Art Museum, and Marquette and UWM Campuses.
We also have monthly families events planned. These events include school picnics, movie nights, Montessori Education Nights, Bring Someone You Love to School Day, Dunkin’ With Dads, as well as trips to local attractions such as the Milwaukee County zoo, the Betty Brinn Museum, and Lincoln Park. We also host the Montessori Peace Summit for all of the City’s Montessori Schools, this years Peace Summit Date is Saturday, May 30th from 12:30-4.
We would also like to thank GE Corporation for including us as a Community Service Day site last summer and we have been chosen as a Service Day site this summer as well. The great people from GE helped designed and built our Peace Garden on the Northwest corner of the playground as well as worked in the classrooms to get the school ready.
