Families

When reading to your young child, ask questions, sing the song, and have the child count with you or touch pictures as you name them. Older children can be encouraged to talk about characters or plots in the story. Try reading the same book that your teenaged child selects, and discussing it over a meal. In this way, you are creating your own family book club! Some books have been made into movies. Read the book and watch the movie. Discuss how the book and movie are the same and how they are different.

Kindergarten – Grade 2

As you read with your child, ask questions.

  • Which character is most like you? How are you the same or different?
  • Would you change the character or their actions in any way? How?

Grades 3–12

As you share reading experiences with your child, talk about the book.

  • What is happening in this book or chapter?
  • Does this book remind you of any other book you’ve read? If so, how is it the same, or how is it different?
  • What, if anything, would you change about the book?
  • What would you like to tell the author?

Above all, enjoy your time together — and let’s get reading!
