Welcome to your MPS Back to School Headquarters, featuring resources to help you be prepared for the coming school year and ideas for summertime activities.
Summer Academy
Today the world is moving faster than ever. It is critical for students to stay ahead of the curve. Summer Academy enrichment offerings for students are designed to provide extended learning opportunities to strengthen or enhance skills.
City of Milwaukee residents may attend the elementary and high school morning academic programs free of charge. MPS Elementary Summer Academy and High School Credit Recovery programs are available to non-MPS students and families.
Students who live outside the city and attend public or private suburban high schools or MPS through open enrollment are classified as Tuition Students and, therefore, must pay tuition or have a tuition waiver on file with MPS in order to attend Summer School. Call (414) 475-8238 for more information. Learn more about Summer Academy Programs here.
The largest programs — elementary and credit recovery – begin June 24. Other start times vary. Details about specific programs along with how and when to register for each type is available here.
Summer Reading Lists
Are your children making reading part of their summer routines? Our reading experts recommended great summertime books for each grade level. Find them on Pinterest or on the Family Reading List page. Download a .pdf of suggested reading for all grade levels here. Don’t forget to become a Super Reader at your neighborhood Milwaukee Public Library.
Summer Activities
Did you know that Milwaukee Recreation offers FREE summer activities at playgrounds across the city? The program runs from June 17 – July 26 and offers sports, arts & crafts, field trips & more. For more information, call (414) 475-8811 or click here. Milwaukee Recreation also offers a variety of Summer Enrichment Programs. Visit MilwaukeeRecreation.net for more information.
Additionally, the Milwaukee Public Library and other local organizations offer a variety of summer camps, entertainment and other programs for students and families. Look for links to these resources in the sidebar under Other Resources.
Summer Meal Sites
MPS is once again partnering with Hunger Task Force and Kohl’s Cares to provide summer meals for children 18 and younger. These generous community partners play a significant role in organizing, funding, and marketing the summer meal programs. Hunger Task Force also provides schools with much needed picnic coolers, and ice packs. Hunger Task Force also canvasses community members, going door to door, as the summer rolls on, making sure no child goes hungry. Click here to view a list of the free summer meal sites in Milwaukee.
School Supply Lists
Similar to last school year, the district has condensed all the different school supply lists into ONE list that our K-8 schools are asked to use. We did this to keep costs manageable for our families. Look for the list in English and Spanish in the sidebar to the right.
Calendars
Our year-round schools begin August 5. Almost all of our other schools are on a traditional calendar, and their first day of classes is September 3. Both Ronald Reagan High School and Rufus King International School start August 12. Look for the downloadable school calendars in the sidebar to the right.
Bell Schedules
Find out the arrival and dismissal times for your child’s school. Look in the sidebar to the right for Elementary/K-8 and Middle/High School Bell Schedules.
