Tornado/severe weather drill set for April 19

Statewide, students in public schools will be part of a tornado/severe weather drill on Thursday, April 19, 2012 at 1:45 p.m.  All MPS schools will participate.  School staff will be required to record the date, time, number of participants on an official record.

Tornado and Severe Weather Awareness Week is April 16-20 in Wisconsin.  As State Superintendent of Schools Tony Evers has indicated, it’s a time to make sure students and staff are prepared to follow needed procedures when severe weather strikes.

Up to a dozen tornadoes hit Wisconsin each year on average, and last year the National Weather Services confirmed 38 twisters.  Those tornadoes included the funnel cloud over La Crosse last May that damaged more than 100 homes and businesses.

If actual severe weather occurs anywhere in the state on April 19, the tornado drill will be postponed until Friday, April 20. MPS year-round schools will conduct their drills after returning from spring intercession on Thursday, April 26 at 1:45 p.m.
