MILWAUKEE — Lincoln Center of the Arts took top honors on Saturday at this year’s Milwaukee Public Schools Middle School Battle of the Drum Lines.
Families and other fans filled bleachers at Bay View Middle and High School for the event, now in its seventh year.
Six MPS schools performed: Audubon Middle School, Bay View Middle School, Lincoln, Mary McLeod Bethune Academy, Hopkins Lloyd Community School and Tippecanoe K-8 School for the Arts and Humanities/Dover.
Last year’s champions, Bay View, took second-place honors and Audubon’s junior varsity team came home with third-place honors. All the teams were honored for their outstanding effort.
“All the schools participating did a great job,” MPS Music Curriculum Specialist Douglas Kuepper said. “I was very proud of their quality of performance as well as the respectful and courteous behavior.”
MPS Chief Academic Officer Heidi Ramirez addressed the crowd, stressing the support she and Superintendent Gregory Thornton have for music as a critical component of a child’s education.
Admission to the event was free thanks to the Bay View Neighborhood Association.
