MHSA’s soul music show was a winner!

I typically write a blog post Friday afternoon, sharing a reflection of the week, or responding to questions.  But I could not wait to put a spotlight on some talented students, as well as dedicated staff and families.

It is the reason I am still humming this morning – days after visiting Milwaukee High School of the Arts (MHSA) for Friday night’s show, “The Soul of MHSA”.   My wife, son and I were joined by Chief of Staff Naomi Gubernick and Chief Academic Officer Heidi Ramirez for this rousing retrospective of American music legends.

You may have seen the students rehearsing Friday morning – live -on Ch.6′s Real Milwaukee show.  They had a good time talking with reporter Tony Clark.  Here’s the link to three videos showing Tony and the student musicians and singers on Real Milwaukee Friday.

On Friday night, the kids had us tapping our feet, singing and dancing along.  Wow!  What a great job the students did!   I must also give a well-deserved shout-out to the staff and parents.  They supported the youngsters as though this were a large, extended family in which all the children are loved and encouraged to do well.  Even alumni came back, and that was gratifying to see.  This is just one example of the great things happening in our schools.

Thanks for the special night, MHSA  It had me thinking back to the music that provided a backdrop to my high school and college years.  On this Monday morning as I dive into the work of the week, I say what James Brown so artfully said (and what the students sang on Friday): “I feel good!”
