MHSA choral director wins national recognition

MILWAUKEE – Milwaukee High School of the Arts Choral Director Raymond Roberts now stands in elite company.

The 21-year MHSA veteran has been named one of 11 outstanding “Choral Directors of Note” by Choral Director magazine.

Winners from around the country were selected based on the recommendations and nominations of students, fellow teachers, administrators and colleagues.

Roberts is pictured on the cover of the January 2012 edition of the magazine.

As choral director, he has helped lead the school’s choir and individual students to performances at state and regional music conferences — and performances with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. He has also helped lead the choir and students to receive recognition from the NFAA YoungArts program, the GRAMMY Foundation, the NEA Foundation, the Classical Singer competition and the NAACP ACT-SO Competition.

Roberts said he does not know who recommended him.

He told the magazine he hopes to leave his students “with the understanding that someone expected great things from them, was willing to help equip them with the skills and tools necessary to meet those high expectations – and that they should, for the rest of their lives, hold themselves and their children to those same lofty expectations in all their endeavors.”
