10 MPS wrestlers competing in WIAA state tournament

MILWAUKEE – Ten Milwaukee Public Schools students are competing in the WIAA state wrestling tournament beginning Thursday.

Preliminary rounds start at 3 p.m. at the Kohl Center in Madison.

Eight Bradley Tech High School students – Devondrick Bankston, Oshawum Chalmers, Mouhamed Fall, Diremius Gordon, John Jude, Justin Parker, Vernon Rash and Travis Smith – are among those competing.

Two Riverside University High School students – Shondell Stiff and Reggie Turner – are also in the competition.

“It’s really exciting any time one of your athletes makes it to the highest level competition in the state,” Riverside coach Christopher Kempowski said. “We are proud of the work Shondell and Reggie have put in not only during the season, but in the off season as well. Making it to the state wrestling tournament is the number one goal at the beginning of the season not only for our athletes but for the coaching staff as well.”

Bradley Tech coach Craig Bevilacqua said it’s a great accomplishment to get one wrestler to qualify for state “let alone eight. It feels great. They deserve it. They worked hard all summer and throughout the season. All the credit goes to them for their hard work and dedication. I couldn’t do it if it wasn’t for my assistants. They are awesome and dedicated to the sport just like my wrestlers.”

“It is going to be crazy and exciting coaching these young men to victory,” Bevilacqua said.
